Spring 2011 - New News!!!

Wilmington, NC winery Awarded 20 International Medals

Wilmington, nc; march 31, 2011:  Noni Bacca Winery, 420 Eastwood Rd, Wilmington, NC, was awarded 20 medals at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition that took place on March 26 and 27, 2011, at the Plaza Hotel in Rochester, NY.  This competition is dubbed North America’s largest wine competition and the world’s largest competition that supports a single charity, Camp Good Days and Special Times.  Camp Good Days and Special Times, Inc. is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children, adults and families whose lives have been touched by cancer and other life challenges.  The Wilmington, NC winery was awarded eight Silver medals and twelve bronze medals.

  • Silver:  Black Muscat, Malbec, Supertuscan, Brunello, Montepulciano, Late Harvest Cab Franc, Amarone and Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Bronze:  Nero d’Avola, Chianti, Cucidati, Shiraz, Barolo, Zinfandel, Valpolicella, Lambrusco, Grenache, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir and Symphony.

The Finger Lakes International Wine Competition is the Largest of its kind.  For the second straight year, the 11th annual Finger Lakes International Wine Competition set a record for the number of entries Saturday. At the Rochester Plaza Hotel, a record-breaking 3,259 wines from 788 wineries were entered.  The wines came from 19 nations, six Canadian provinces and all 50 states. Last year's entries comprised 3,010 wines from 666 wineries.  Each judge knows only the style of wine, such as whether it is a Chardonnay or Riesling, but not the brand or winery. The judges include sommeliers, educators, winemakers, writers and industry consultants from Argentina, Chile, France, Israel, Italy and the United States.  "To be a good judge, you have to be able to separate a wine that you wouldn't normally drink yourself but that is well made and deserves an award," said King, a 21-year judge from North Carolina. "You have to be able to remove yourself and your taste from the equation."

"It's really an extremely well-run competition. ... I've never been in a competition that was run more professionally or flawlessly."  In addition, the quality of the judges each year "I think is unmatched," she said, and "the quality of entries is pretty high."

Ken and Toni Incorvaia, owners of Noni Bacca Winery at 420 Eastwood Road, wanted to participate for the second year in the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition in Rochester, N.Y., in March mainly because the event’s proceeds support a camp for children with cancer.

“We like doing things that are going to give back,” Ken said. “Those are the things that matter.”

They submitted three wines last year and won a gold and a bronze medal. This year, Toni said, they decided to enter 15, not expecting a big result as they competed against more than 3,000 wines from more than 660 wineries in five continents, nine Canadian provinces and 50 states.

“When we submitted them, I was thinking one or two medals would be nice, but to have received 12 medals is just extraordinary,” Toni said. “We feel like the little winery that could because we were up against the Gallos and these major commercial wineries of the world.”

Gold was awarded for Noni Bacca’s sweet Muscat. “As soon as word got out, it sold out,” Toni said of the orange blossom Muscat, a dessert wine.

Silver was awarded for Vecchia Vite, Vino da Tavola, Aurora Borealis and the House Red. Bronze medals were awarded for the winery’s Almond Spumante, Cucidati, Dolcetto, La Porta di Villa, Under the Tuscan Sun, Vino Grande and Summer in Germany.

From their 1,500-square-foot business in the Eastwood Commons shopping center, Ken and Toni produce 67 varieties of wine, sell wine and beer making equipment and ingredients, assist wine and beer makers with instruction and information and support other wineries in the area.

In May, the couple will use grapes that survived earthquakes in Chile to create a Malbac wine. And while they bring wines of the world to the Wilmington area, they also work with grape growers in western North Carolina.

“We like supporting other wineries and vineyards here in the state,” Ken said.

Toni makes the winery’s labels, and some come from family pictures and documents from the early 1900s. She labeled some special bottles “Goo Goo Dolls” for the band’s bassist Robby Takac because Toni and Takac grew up together in the same neighborhood in Buffalo, N.Y.

The name of the winery, Noni Bacca, is a childhood nickname of Toni’s.

After moving from Buffalo to Wilmington, the Incorvaias opened the winery in the last quarter of 2007 and grew the business to be profitable in a down economy.

“That’s almost unheard of,” Toni said.

“We’re still here and we’re going strong,” Ken said.
